Also known as Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS), this condition is caused by overuse or chronic strain of the calf muscle at the origin on the shinbone. It can also be characterised by inflammation of the periosteum (the connective tissue covering the bone).
MTSS manifests in patients who either begin a new activity that involves running and jumping, or in runners who adopt new running terrain, increase their speed or change their shoe type. MTSS is also prevalent in patients with flat feet, due to the extra stress on the soleus muscle. Treatment involves gentle stretching, massage and icing of the Achilles tendon. Sometimes anti-inflammatories are recommended for pain relief. When the condition is present due to the biomechanics of the foot, orthoses are recommended.

Pain in the Achilles tendon (a few centimetres above the heel bone) during exercise could indicate you are suffering from Achilles tendinopathy. Also known as Achilles tendinosis, it is a result of micro-tears, which the body responds to by producing new blood vessels, which also bring new nerves.
If you feel you may be suffering from Achilles tendinopathy, reduce your physical exercise. Treatment can involve strengthening the calf muscle to reduce the stress placed on the Achilles tendon, including toe raises and balancing on your toes. Relief can also be sought through stretching, soft tissue massage and rest.
